Tokyo, Japan | 19 October 2026 — A significant milestone in Asia-Pacific's carbon capture and storage (CCS) development was marked today at the Japan CCUS Summit 2026, organised by Leader Associates, as PETRONAS, TotalEnergies and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. signed Malaysia's Carbon Storage Joint Venture Agreement during a high-level signing ceremony in Tokyo.

The agreement was signed between PETRONAS CCS Ventures Sdn. Bhd., TotalEnergies EP CCS Malaysia and Mitsui & Co., Ltd., representing a further step in their ongoing collaboration to advance carbon storage infrastructure in Malaysia and support the development of regional CCS value chains.

Advancing Carbon Storage Collaboration in Asia-Pacific

The signing builds on the companies' earlier cooperation in developing carbon storage solutions in Malaysia, including the evaluation of potential storage sites and the development of commercial frameworks for carbon storage services.

As countries across Asia-Pacific pursue industrial decarbonisation, cross-border CCS infrastructure and international partnerships are becoming increasingly important in connecting industrial CO₂ emitters with suitable geological storage resources.

The agreement highlights the growing role of Malaysia in the regional carbon management landscape and the importance of collaboration between international energy companies in advancing commercially viable CCS infrastructure.
